HISTORY OF THE CLUB

Outdoor tennis was well known to Šarūns Marčiulionis since his carefree childhood. But soon it was replaced by basketball, which did not abandon him even for three decades. However, as soon as he finished his active basketball career, tennis immediately returned to Šarūnas’s life.

Meanwhile, the circle of tennis like-minded people expanded quite rapidly not only in Lithuania, but also in the USA. After the tennis tournament in San Diego named in  his honor Šarūnas Marčiulionis was encouraged by his not only good friend but also godfather Algis Bačianskas to create the same tournament here in Dubingiai. Šarūnas accepted the challenge to organize an international tennis tournament in Dubingiai, Lithuania, called “Dubingiai Open” two years later.

For that purpose the first two tennis courts and a basketball court were built in 2005 in the homestead of Šarūnas Marčiulionis. After it did not receive the attention of basketball players, in 2010 the basketball court, thanks to friends loyal to tennis, was turned into a tennis court. Shortly after, the fourth tennis court was built, allowing even more frequent matches in the surroundings of the Dubingiai club.

Seasonal memberships were established in the  Dubingiai club in 2014. A club building, three changing rooms, a bar and event area and a balcony space connecting the club with the tennis spectators terrace were built for the convenience of the members. It would be hard to imagine the discussion of the competition without a sauna or watching the sunset at the Asveja pier as well.
